The history of Basch House
Between historic walls, at the address Cara Lazara 3, stands an impressive building that bears the seal of time and excellence – Basch House 1887. This beautiful house was built in 1887. according to the design of the famous architect Titus Mačković from Subotica, was originally the residence of Sándor Kertész, the town’s chief physician at the time.
The exterior facades of the villa were inspired by classical Greek architecture, while the villa had an intricate Palladian-style floor plan, with a central hall above which was a glazed skylight, unique in the architecture of Subotica at that time.
In 1912, the villa passed into the ownership of Andreas Lichtnecker, who faithfully preserved the original design and added his own touch by constructing outbuildings.
After that period, in the 1930s, the villa became the property of the Basch family, after whom this building is known as the Basch House because this prominent family has owned it for over a century. During that time this building stood as a silent witness of many historical upheavals and social changes.
Throughout the ages, the villa has changed its purpose – it has witnessed residential and commercial eras, and today proudly opens a new chapter in its history – Basch House 1887, a restaurant created out of love for excellence and dedication to the authentic spirit of this place.
